Today with the slowly recovering economy some companies have to cut back on costs and employees in order to ensure that they strive and prosper economically.  As a result, these companies are getting rid of or laying off many employees as this is one of the quickest and easiest ways to reduce financial costs.

Recently the well-known law firm Weil Gotschal and Manges, which has numerous offices within the United States, declared that it will reduce the number of employees it has by about seven percent from its ranks of one thousand employees, as reported by the New York Law Journal in a June 25, 2013 news article.

This law firm has numerous offices throughout the United States and the cuts will affect numerous offices. The Houston and Boston offices will lose the most employees, however. The law firm declared that it will lay off about a little over one hundred employees which are non-lawyers. These non-lawyers include mostly secretaries. The employees that are laid off will receive a severance package. In addition, the firm will reduce the salaries of about three hundred partners and about two hundred lawyers. The firm has looked at the seniority of these employees and the higher up the employee is on the seniority ladder, the more likely he or she is going to get fired or laid off, since they are getting paid more for their services. The reason that the firm gave for these cuts is that there has been a “drop for premium legal services.”
