The Daily News reported in a January 20, 2013 news article that a cab driver standing outside of his yellow taxi died on the scene after a motorist slammed into him.
The taxi driver was double-parked on East 26th street when a diver of a Nissan hit the back of the taxi car forcing it forward. The cab struck the taxi cab driver forcing him into the air and falling on the curb nearby. The force caused the taxi driver to hit the curb with such force that the man died on impact. The driver of the Nissan only sustained minor injuries.
Witnesses claimed that the accident occurred around 2 a.m. The Nissan driver was speeding. Some witnesses stated that he could have potentially been racing since they could hear the engine roaring. One witness claimed that they overheard the man state that his accelerator got stuck and that is what caused him to crash.
The police report stated that no alcohol was involved. No charges have been filed against the driver at this time. The taxi driver was an immigrant from Bangladesh. He had been studying to become a dental hygienist at the Borough of Manhattan Community College.
